Why I Broke My No-Poo Streak (well, kind of..)
After nine months of going no poo water only, I broke my streak. Yup, that’s right. I couldn’t do it anymore. Keep reading to find out why.
Back in April, I shared my results after two months of washing my hair with water only. I was so happy with how my hair looked and felt, it was much less knotty and I wasn’t shedding as much.
Four months after that, my family and I took a trip to Charleston, SC and I was in the ocean A LOT. It destroyed my hair. I wasn’t about to NOT enjoy my vacation though!
So I kept plugging away and washing with water only for about another two months. The texture changed a lot and my hair didn’t feel as good as it did before. I started to think about why I did no poo water only in the first place. My main reason was to simplify my routine and eliminate the need for shampoo (since most low-tox shampoos aren’t that great).
I also felt like I was trying to prove something by not washing my hair. Like, “look how simple I can be.”
But really, I’m just walking around with uncomfortable, kind of greasy hair and not feeling all that great about it. So who’s coming out on top here?
Before I went with the no poo water only method, I purchased this shampoo from Living Libations. I never used it, simply because I went no poo right after buying it. I checked out the ingredients and they are so super clean, all botanical and no chemical sudsy ingredients.
I decided to go for it and I’m so glad I did! My hair felt absolutely amazing for about a week after using it. I decided to use it again and now I’m on a weekly hair washing schedule with the seabuckthorn shampoo.
If it wasn’t for swimming in the ocean, I would (most likely) still be a no poo water only girl.
But that’s just not realistic (for me). I love the ocean and I’m not giving it up! I want to live life and not be tied down to a no poo lifestyle. Isn’t that the whole point?!
Washing my hair with water only was to simplify my routine at the time. I don’t need to do it anymore. Washing my hair once a week with an incredible shampoo (that is actually good for my hair) works perfectly for me right now.
Yes, I’m still using my no poo water only tools.
I still love to use my bamboo brush, shampoo brush and rosewater spray on my hair.
I also started incorporating a DIY hair serum made with Argan oil, Jojoba oil and a bunch of essential oils that are amazing for hair health like Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood. Get the recipe here.
I massage the hair serum into my scalp and leave it on for 10-15 minutes before I wash it. It makes my hair feel super soft.
And of course, my mermaid spray is a daily must!
Do I still consider myself no poo?
I consider myself sort of no poo. The shampoo from Living Libations that I am using doesn’t have the usual soapy/sudsy ingredients so I wouldn’t say I’m full poo. I consider it similar to the baking soda and apple cider vinegar no-poo method. I’m still using something to “clean” my hair, just not your standard shampoo.
To poo or not to poo, that is the question
If you’re on the fence about the no poo water only method, give it a shot. You never know how your hair will behave. Remember, everyone is different! My experience could be a total 360 from yours.
If you’ve been no pooing for a while and you feel like your hair has lost its shine and feels gross, then start pooing (ha!). No one will hold it against you and you will feel great after that first wash. Then you can decide if you want to keep washing or maybe stick with a once-a-week poo treatment.
Final thoughts on the no poo water only method
I truly loved washing my hair with water only and I wish I could have kept it going. Unfortunately, it just didn’t jive with my lifestyle. If you can keep it up, go for it. And if you can’t, you are still amazing!
