How to Soothe a Scratchy Throat with Essential Oils
I can handle getting a cold, easy peasy, just do a sinus steamer a few times a day (if you don’t know what that is you can find out here) and all better.
Scratchy throats are a different beast. They are sooo uncomfortable and can make anyone just miserable.
Luckily, I have a few different methods (three to be exact!) that really help to soothe a scratchy throat and take away the misery.
Your throat will feel better immediately and although you may have to repeat multiple times throughout the day, it’s good to know you can get some relief here and there.
Method #1: Scratchy Throat Spray
I was a big fan of those scratchy throat sprays back in the day. Now that I’ve cleaned up my act, I’m not a huge fan of the yucky ingredients that come in those sprays.
Essential oils to the rescue! You can make a million different sprays with essential oils so why not a scratchy throat spray. Yep, you got it, I made one and it is a definite scratchy throat soother.
To make the spray, add 1 teaspoon of raw honey, 10 drops of On Guard essential oil blend (or Thieves if you use Young Living), and 10 drops of Lemon essential oil to a 1-ounce spray bottle. Fill the rest with filtered water, put the cap on and shake it up.
Spray directly onto your throat about 5 times. Repeat throughout the day as needed.
This will soothe your scratchy throat immediately and also help you heal. Win-win!
ps – if you don’t have On Guard or Thieves, replace it with 5 drops each of cinnamon and clove essential oil.
Method #2: Lemon Essential Oil Hot Tea
This hot tea is amazing for a scratchy throat, mostly because it takes a while to drink and each sip is so utterly soothing.
To make this tea, get your water boiling, pull out your favorite mug and add the following to it: 1 Tablespoon raw honey, 1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother!), and 2-3 drops Lemon Essential Oil.
Pour the hot water in the mug and stir to combine. Relax, sip and feel that scratchy throat melt away.
Method #3: Apply Essential Oils Topically
This is number 3 because it doesn’t produce immediate effects like the two methods above. I mostly use this one in combination with the other methods, BUT this is the main method I use for my kids (unless they let me spray their throats, which isn’t very likely).
I love applying essential oils topically because it is extremely healing for our bodies. I use a combination of Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Lemon, Rosemary and Thyme essential oils.
I used to combine all of the oils in a roller bottle with a carrier oil and roll it over the throat and chest, but this year I made a DIY cough and sore throat salve and it has worked so well!
You can get this recipe in the link above, but real quick you melt 1/3 cup coconut oil with 2 Tbsp beeswax, let it cool for a bit and then add in your essential oils: 20 drops Eucalyptus, 10 drops Melaleuca, 10 drops Rosemary, 10 drops Lemon and 5 drops Thyme.
Pour it into a 4-ounce glass container and you a ready to roll. This will last you a really long time, like the entire cold and flu season, so it’s really worth making!
Apply to the throat and chest throughout the day and your scratchy throat will be a thing of the past.
If you don’t want to make the salve, you can just add the essential oils to a 10-ml roller bottle with a carrier oil and use it that way.
