How to Get Rid of The Stomach Bug Quickly
Whether it’s vomiting, diarrhea or just plain old stomach pains and bloating – the stomach bug is awful. We all go to great lengths to avoid this thing, but sometimes the cards just aren’t in our favor.
Call it a little bit of luck and a little bit of essential oil magic, but we have been able to avoid it for the past few years (knocking on wood while I write this entire post).
So I will break this down into two parts – how to avoid the stomach bug and how to treat the stomach bug with essential oils.
How to Avoid the Stomach Bug
We avoid the stomach bug during cold and flu season by doing a few simple things.
Washing Hands
The biggest and most important task is making sure everyone washes their hands with warm, soapy water. Regular, good old-fashioned soap.
I stopped using antibacterial soaps years ago – they have some pretty nasty ingredients and the only thing they really did for us was make our hands super dry and kill off all bacteria (we still need the good bacteria for our immune health!)
Instead, I buy a big container of this castile soap and these foaming soap dispensers, and make my own hand soaps.
I fill the dispenser up about 2/3 of the way with water and then add the castile soap (about 2 tablespoons). I like to throw in about 10 drops of Sweet Orange Essential Oil. Shake it up and then it’s ready to go!
Using an Immune Boosting Essential Oil Roller
During cold and flu season (and pretty much through the school year) I use an immune boosting essential oil roller on my kids every night before bed.
My favorite combination is a mix of Oregano, On Guard (or Cinnamon), Tea Tree and Lemon. You can read the exact steps to make it here.
I rotate between using this roller and then doing just Tea Tree or Oregano (both diluted) down their spines or on the bottoms of their feet.
If we have been around or exposed to sick people, I always use the immune-boosting roller for at least a week every night AND I diffuse Frankincense and On Guard in our rooms.

How to use Essential Oils for the Stomach Virus
Alright so down to the nitty-gritty. I am basing this routine on what has worked for us in the past and for friends and family.
Diffuse an Essential Oil Blend with Anti-Viral Properties
Once someone is sick, I break out the diffuser. You want to diffuse essential oils that have virus-fighting properties. I like to do a combination of Frankincense, Arborvitae and Cinnamon (about 2 drops each).
I have the diffuser running pretty much all day in several rooms for two reasons. One – it helps the sick person get better and two – it prevents others from getting sick. Win-win!

Apply Essential Oils to the Stomach
This is super helpful for digestive support, especially in emergency situations.
The best essential oils for digestive support are Peppermint and Ginger. I like to make a roller with Peppermint, Ginger and Frankincense – about 2-3 drops of each and fill the rest with a carrier oil (for adults I add about 5-10 drops each).
To get this on your kids, do a quick roll over the belly and then cover it up with their shirt immediately. They should be okay with that fingers crossed.
Apply Essential Oils to the Bottoms of Feet
This is where the magic happens.
The oils you are applying on your stomach will help with nausea and pain, but the virus killing oils you put on the bottoms of your feet (or spine) will get to the root of the virus that is haunting your body.
I usually make a roller of the same combination I diffuse – Frankincense, Arborvitae and Cinnamon. About ten drops each with a carrier oil. The immune-boosting roller mentioned above also works great (if you can stand the smell of Oregano!).
p.s. – I get a lot of my essential oils from doTERRA because I am a wholesale member, but recently I’ve been trying out the brand Amrita and I am so impressed! Fast shipping too!
Consistency is Key
It’s all about consistency. A good rule of thumb is to oil every twenty minutes for the first hour and then once every hour after that.
My little guy caught the stomach bug a few years ago. The whole nine – waking up in the night and getting sick several times. Every time he got sick, I used my oils on him and when I heard the dreaded cry again (he was only 2 at the time, poor thing), I cursed my oils thinking they weren’t working.
I kept at it though and even though it seemed like forever, he only woke up sick about three times total, and in the morning he was perfectly fine. If I wasn’t using my oils on him, it would have been sooo much worse.
I hope this stomach bug treatment with essential oils helps you out and I truly hope you don’t have to deal with the stomach bug this year!
