First, Let’s Talk About Sun Protection
Because that’s the key isn’t it?! I wear sunscreen on my face and hands every single day, even in the winter. About two years ago, I had basal cell carcinoma removed from the back of my neck so I’m always extra careful in the sun. It’s also great to wear sunscreen every day for anti-aging purposes of course!
My favorite sunscreen to wear on a daily basis is Juice Beauty CC’s Cream in desert glow. I love the texture and it doesn’t feel heavy on my face at all. I’m one of those people who can’t stand foundation and this CC cream literally feels like I’m wearing nothing.
Come summer and beach time I like to whip up my own DIY sunscreen using this recipe from the Wellness Mama, leaving out the coconut oil because it makes me break out. I use this on everyone in my family and it works great! I always keep this natural sunscreen on hand in case I run out of my homemade one.
The Best Essential Oils for Sunburn
There are so many options when it comes to using essential oils to heal a sunburn. I narrowed it down to four amazing oils that are the most common (aka you might already have in your tool kit!) and work super fast. You can’t beat plant power!
Lavender is the BEST oil for any type of skin issue, especially burns. It is super soothing and healing.
Peppermint is extremely cooling which is a must for a sunburn! Nothing feels better than a drop of Peppermint and Lavender mixed with fractionated coconut oil rubbed all over your skin after a long day in the sun.
Tea Tree helps with the itchiness factor that often happens with sunburns. It is very healing to the skin as well.
Frankincense is an amazing essential oil for skin and its anti-inflammatory properties are extremely helpful when it comes to sunburn.
Natural Sunburn Remedies
It can be as simple as adding a little coconut oil to your hand with a few drops of Lavender + any of the essential oils mentioned above and rubbing it all over the sunburned areas.
Aloe vera gel is amazing for burns so you can make a little concoction of coconut oil, a few drops of aloe vera gel and a drop or two of essential oils and rub it all over the area. You can turn that into a soothing salve!
One of my favorite sunburn remedies is an after sun soothing spray. I think it’s the best way to cover larger areas of skin and it’s easy enough that my kids can use it by themselves. Check out the recipe below!
