How To Use Essential Oils (Summertime Routine)
Summer is by far my favorite time to use essential oils (and if you’ve stumbled upon this post during the winter, check out my fall/winter essential oil routine). It’s a great time to experiment and use different essential oils, try out a few new recipes and have some fun!
I know a lot of people who own essential oils and are afraid to use them or just aren’t sure how to incorporate them into a daily routine. I’m going to break down how I use essential oils every day to give you some ideas and tips on how YOU can do it too.
We get so focused on using our essential oils to keep our families healthy and safe from all the winter bugs, yucky seasonal changes and anxiety over homework and school stresses, that we tend to put essentials on the back burner over the summer. But I say keep oiling!!
Yes, once summer is here we are less stressed and free from all of the school year oiling – but now my kids are home 24/7 and that creates a whole different kind of stress. Calming oils, please!
Not to mention, there is always a summer virus going around that spreads like wildfire, so I’m still using our immune-boosting blends over the summer and you should too!
I love making my own bug spray, sunscreen, sun-in and so many other fun recipes with essential oils. Essential oils like Lavender and Tea Tree are so good for itchy and swollen bug bites, poison ivy, sunburns and all of the other not so fun summer stuff. So please, always keep your essential oils on hand, you never know when you will need them.

Essential oils have become pretty common and trendy and for good reason. They are an amazing, natural, affordable option for us healthy mamas! If my kid is complaining of stomach discomfort, I just whip out an oil and he is better instantly. You can’t beat that! The amount of money we have saved on copays and prescriptions is unreal.
So why in the world should you care about my essential oils routine?
Well, for one, the proof is in the pudding. I’ve been using essential oils for over seven years and my family is the healthiest we have ever been, my skin has totally transformed (thanks to all of my homemade beauty products) and the mood swings have chilled out.
Two, I’m hoping to inspire you to use your essential oils and not let them go to waste. The amazingness in each bottle is not something that should be sitting on a shelf, never to be touched. USE THEM CONSISTENTLY and you will see results.
I am not an expert (although I am working on my aromatherapy certification right now!), I’m just a mom of two boys trying to make healthy decisions for our family every day. We use them safely and carefully and we see results on a consistent basis. They work, you just have to use them!
I started out with this little kit of the top ten essential oils from doTERRA and they are still the oils I use most often. Best $150 I ever spent! One of the many things I love about doTERRA is the amazing blends they put together. Whatever you need – calming, grounding, uplifting, pain relief – you name it, they have a blend for it! I use A LOT of their blends throughout the day.
If and when you buy this kit you will become a wholesale member which means you can always buy your essential oils (THE BEST!) at 25% off retail. No monthly obligations. Of course, feel free to email me if you have any questions or shoot me a message on Instagram.
Let’s get into my summertime essential oil routine
Morning
I always start the day with a balancing and grounding blend on my wrists and back of neck. I like to do a combination of Lavender, Frankincense and Bergamot (usually in a roller or I combine them in a 5 ml bottle) or I use my absolute favorite blend grounding blend, Balance.
I like to take a few big inhales and just give myself a few minutes to get my bearings and think about the day. I keep it on my dresser so I remember to use it. This is important to remember: keep your essential oils where you use them!
Next, I’ll put a few dabs of Frankincense on any spots or scars on my face.
Then I add a few drops of a blend from doTERRA called Elevation (joyful blend) to my diffuser bracelet or necklace, whatever I’m feeling. I need uplifting blends in the summer. The kids are up extra early and sometimes it’s overwhelming to think about the day ahead. I just keep smelling my bracelet or necklace throughout the day and it makes me happy.
If I have time I’ll put an uplifting citrus blend in the diffuser. Today I did 3 drops of Lime, 3 drops of Tangerine and 3 drops of Grapefruit. It was citrus heaven. Yum.
Throughout the Day
I always spray the countertops down with my homemade cleaner that currently has Lavender and Grapefruit mixed in – so relaxing while I’ll clean.
If we are going to the pool I’ll bring my DIY Sun-In spray and spray it on my hair about 15 minutes before I go out in the sun.
I always keep my essential oil keychain with me at all times because you never know when a bug bite, scrape or stomachache might happen when we are out and about.
Late afternoon I like to run the diffuser again with Peppermint and Wild Orange for some uplifting vibes because that’s usually the time of day I’m dragging.
Evening
After dinner, I like to set up the diffuser with one of our sleep diffuser blends. I usually run this in either the family room or upstairs, basically wherever we are congregating after dinner. I love sleepytime diffuser blends for relieving stress and getting everyone in bedtime mode.
Even though the kids aren’t in school, I still like to roll an immune-boosting essential oil on them before bed. I tend to lay off the heavier, spicy essential oils in the summer, like Cinnamon and Clove. Instead, I’ll use Tea Tree or Wild Orange for a nightly boost. Last night it was Tea Tree diluted down the spine because it was closest to me on the nightstand. It has to be easy or I won’t do it!
If the kids seem a little energetic and not so sleepy, I’ll put a drop of Lavender on their sheets or pillowcase to get them relaxed and ready for a good night of sleep.
Now it’s my turn!
I like to massage my face with Argan Oil and a drop of Frankincense, Lavender or Geranium as part of my Nightly Skincare Routine for Glowing Skin. This is so relaxing and probably my favorite part of the day.
Then I give myself a foot massage with a calming oil like Lavender, Frankincense or Cedarwood (or a combination of all three!) and right before bed I’ll put a drop or two of Lavender in my hands, rub them together and take a few big inhales. This helps me get an amazing night of sleep.
And that’s it! Nothing complicated, but keeps us all sane and healthy throughout the summer. If you have questions or are interested in any of the essential oils I mentioned, send me an email!
