What can ruin your day more than a big ugly pimple appearing out of nowhere?! It’s just the worst. And then you start to think about it too much, obsess over it and it gets worse.
Enter this awesome home remedy that fights pimples overnight!
This is one of the best DIY remedies for pimples because it actually works.
As far as what is causing your acne or breakouts, it could be anything. Stress, hormones, and diet are usually the biggies. Here are a few tips from Alyssa at Simply Quinoa to help manage acne and clear skin naturally.
I personally noticed a difference when I stopped using so many products on my face. I only cleanse at night and I usually use a facial oil instead of a foaming cleanser (they dry out your skin – no good for acne!).
Oil cleansing really helped clear my skin, it evened out my complexion and it currently gives my skin an all-over glow. This is my favorite oil cleansing recipe.
We are already dealing with pimples – putting harsh products on top of that can only do more damage and cause super dry skin. Let’s not create more problems right?
Once I started oil cleansing, my skin became much more balanced. Who would have thought that not washing my face would be one of the best home remedies for pimples!
Do home remedies for pimples work overnight?
If you catch the pimple before it’s a big, red zit then there is a good chance it won’t be noticeable in the morning.
I have noticed that when I dab a little bit of the spot treatment on a pimple and try not to think about it, it never gets any bigger and just kind of goes away.
Our minds are so powerful when it comes to this stuff – trust me! I used to obsess over pimples every night and then check on them first thing in the morning. It didn’t do anything but make them worse.
Once I made the decision to stop obsessing, my skin cleared up. It sounds crazy, but it’s true!
Okay, back to the home remedy for pimples!
This DIY remedy is perfect to use as a spot treatment after cleansing and moisturizing. It is inspired by the blemish gel recipe in the book Plant-Powered Beauty.
The star of the show is Tea Tree Essential Oil. Tea Tree is antibacterial and antimicrobial which makes it the perfect pimple fighter.
I also find that combining Tea Tree with Lavender and Frankincense essential oils helps with inflammation (hello cystic acne!) and scarring that usually occurs with blemishes.
Blemish Buster Base Ingredients
The three essential oils above are definitely the superstar ingredients of this home remedy for pimples, but there are two more that I consider the “base ingredients”.
Aloe Vera Gel is incredible for skin issues. You probably already know that it’s great for sunburns, but did you know it’s also good for eczema, healing wounds and bum batta bum….acne!
From mindbodygreen:
“Aloe vera gel contains two hormones: Auxin and Gibberellins. These two hormones provide wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce skin inflammation. Giberellin in aloe vera acts as a growth hormone stimulating the growth of new cells. It allows the skin to heal quickly and naturally with minimal scarring.”
Witch Hazel is a natural astringent which makes it the perfect base for our blemish buster. We only use a little bit because it can be a bit drying to the skin.
How to Make your DIY Remedy for Pimples
Combine the following ingredients in a small bowl:
- 1 Tablespoon Aloe Vera Gel
- 1 teaspoon Witch Hazel
- 10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
- 5 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
- 5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
Whisk all of the ingredients together and you are done! This makes about 20 ml of product so you can store it in a small glass dropper or two 10 ml essential oil rollers. If you want to make one roller just cut the recipe in half!
Remember this is a spot treatment. Use it to dab it on blemishes 2-3 times a day. It is not meant to be rubbed all of your face. As I mentioned above, if you are dealing with more than just a few breakouts try using the oil cleansing method first.
Cheers to clear skin!

Hi Margie – you can totally add FCO, I never felt the need to. It might not stick to your skin as well with the addition of oils, but you can definitely try it. Let me know how it goes!

How come you don’t add FCO?

Hi! Thyme is great for skin, but it needs to be diluted with a carrier because it can irritate the skin. I would probably skip it for this recipe, but you could definitely add it after you take the mask off! Make sure you dilute it heavily with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil. The dilution ratio would be about 1 drop per tablespoon of carrier oil. I hope this helps! xo Maryjane

Would thyme be helpful as well? How much thyme would you recommend adding to the recipe if so?

Hi! Yes, you can definitely add Lemon (soo good for skin!) but you would need to advise them to only use it at night because lemon (and most citrus EOs) can make skin sensitive to the sun. Hope this helps!

Thank you for sharing this. I love learning about natural skin care. I’ve been using tea tree oil, but the scent alone is a bit strong. I love the idea of mixing it will other oils. Maybe that will make it more of a pleasant scent. Thanks again!
