Summer Essential Oil Recipes
We usually think of using essential oils for sleep and sickness, but they are also amazing at keeping our skin healthy, especially with the wear and tear of the sun, ocean, pools, hiking, camping and all of those fun summer activities. Since summer is right around the corner, it’s time to whip up a few of my favorite essential oil recipes!

Essential oil recipes you need to make this summer
My favorite essential oil recipes consist of a soothing after-sun spray, a natural bug spray, a healing poison ivy spray, a sunscreen spray and a sun-in spray for highlights. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
I like to whip them up at the beginning of the summer so I have them on hand and I don’t have to worry about it for the rest of the summer. If I’m short on time or not feeling very motivated, I do have a few lazy methods which I’ll share with you below each recipe.
Essential Oils for the win!
Essential oils are the standout ingredient in all of the recipes. They are soothing and healing to the skin which is a must when it comes to summer. Lavender, for example, is extremely soothing for sunburns and bug bites. I use it in my aftersun spray and it feels amazing when it goes on your skin. If someone has a bug bite I just dab a little bit on the bite every fifteen minutes or so and the itching and swelling will go down. How amazing to have one essential oil that can do so many things!
Your skin is your largest organ so let’s treat it with some respect. What we put on our skin is just as important as what we eat. In fact, most of the essential oils I use on my skin I will also take internally. There are no preservatives, chemicals or synthetic ingredients. Can I get an Amen!
If you already have essential oils, then you rock! If you don’t, then I highly recommend doing a bit of research before you buy them and make your essential oil recipes.
You always want to purchase the highest quality essential oils that you can afford – particularly from a company that is very transparent about their sourcing, harvesting and testing practices. You want to know where they source their plants (should be where they grow indigenously), how they are harvested (must be at peak times) and the type of testing they do.
Once you are comfortable with the info you gathered, buy some oils! Amrita Aromatherapy is one of my favorite brands. They fit all of the criteria I mentioned above and I have been really happy with the essential oils and hydrosols I purchased from them. They have really fast shipping too!
Supplies
We are keeping the supplies super simple for these recipes. Remember essential oils are powerfully concentrated so a few drops go a long way. For the majority of the recipes you will need:
Essential Oils (high-quality, see above)
4 ounce Glass Spray Bottles
Fractionated Coconut Oil
Now let’s get to the essential oil recipes!
Summer Essential Oil Recipes
After Sun Soothing Spray
⅓ cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
1 Tbsp Aloe Vera Gel
15 drops Lavender
15 drops Peppermint
10 drops Tea Tree
10 drops Frankincense (optional: for extra soothing and healing)
Combine all ingredients in a 4-ounce glass spray bottle. Shake to combine. Apply to skin as needed.
Lazy Mama Tip: Take a dollop of coconut oil in your palm, add 1-2 drops of Lavender and Peppermint and apply to skin.

Natural Bug Repellent Spray
⅓ cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
1 Tbs Witch Hazel
50 drops Citronella
10 drops Peppermint
10 drops Patchouli
5 drops Geranium
Combine ingredients in a 4-ounce glass spray bottle. Shake to combine before each use.
Laza Mama Tip: If you are a doTERRA user, grab their Terrashield blend and put a few drops of Terrashield in your palm (it’s already diluted with fractionated coconut oil) and rub all over legs, arms and anywhere exposed to the outdoors. Making the spray is more cost-effective, but sometimes we are just lazy and don’t care!
When you or a little one does get bitten, try dabbing the bite with Lavender like I mentioned above. If it’s really itchy do a layer of Tea Tree as well.
Soothing Poison Ivy Spray
4 Tbsp Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
2 tsp Kosher Salt
10 drops Peppermint
10 drops Lavender
10 drops Tea Tree
Combine all ingredients in a 4-ounce glass spray bottle. Shake before applying. Apply frequently throughout the day, gently with a cotton ball.
I don’t have a Lazy Mama tip for this one because you can’t be lazy when it comes to Poison Ivy. Keep up with the spray and you should feel some relief.
Soakin’ up the Sun Sunscreen Spray
1/3 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil or Jojoba Oil
10 drops Lavender
10 drops Sandalwood or Helichrysum
2 tsp Carrot Seed Oil
1/2 Tbsp Non-Nano Zinc Oxide
Combine all ingredients in a 4-ounce glass spray bottle. Shake before applying.
