The Ultimate Homemade Body Butter for Glowing Skin
There is so much to love about winter – the crisp, cold weather, a freshly fallen snow, cozy snuggles under a blanket, the kids going to bed early because it gets dark at 5.
BUT there is also the dry, sometimes itchy skin that accompanies the cold weather. THE WORST!
I love using a variety of oils on my skin throughout the year, but come winter, mama needs a little more moisture. Enter Shea Butter.
Shea butter has been a life-changing ingredient for me. I have always suffered from dry skin, especially my hands and ESPECIALLY in the winter. Since making this body butter my skin is soooo happy. Totally balanced out and less dry!
Shea butter (this amazing one is my fave) is extremely moisturizing, anti-inflammatory and rich in Vitamins A and E. An amazing beautiful skin ingredient!

What else is in our homemade body butter for glowing skin?
The other star ingredients are cocoa butter (nourishing and soothing), coconut oil (skin softening and strengthening, anti-aging), and apricot kernel oil (you can substitute any carrier oil you like – avocado oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, etc.).
You can also add your favorite essential oils, but I decided to keep this one plain because the cocoa butter makes it smell chocolatey and delicious!
Homemade Body Butter Recipe for Glowing Skin
- 1/4 cup shea butter
- 1/4 cup cocoa butter
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 3 Tbsp apricot kernel oil
- 30 drops favorite essential oil (optional – I recommend Lavender or Ylang Ylang )
Combine shea butter, cocoa butter and coconut oil in a double boiler until just melted. Let cool for a few minutes and then add in the apricot kernel oil and essential oils.
Let cool in the fridge until it hardens up a bit, but it is still soft to the touch (mine took about one and a half hours). Break out your hand or stand mixer and start whipping the mixture up until it’s the consistency of whipped cream (or whatever consistency you prefer), constantly scraping down the sides.
Once you’ve reached your desired texture, spoon the mixture into a small mason jar (I love these super useful ones).
Apply daily to your body and hands, saying goodbye to dry skin while you do it!
Homemade Body Butter will make your skin glow!
I swear there isn’t a store-bought lotion out there that can compare to homemade body butter. It’s so creamy and luxurious – a real treat for your skin – and the best part is you can make it easily in your kitchen (over and over again).
Enjoy the recipe!

Thank you for this awesome post. I made it and it is heavenly. My skin feels soft and smells great.
I used the lavender essential oil and replaced the coconut oil with jojoba oil.

Hi! You can try Mango butter instead of Shea. It will come out great! And nope no Rosemary in it:)

I’m a little late to this conversation. I’m allergic to shea (latex related). Is there something else i can use in place of the shea? I’m also VERY deathly allergic to rosemary … I understand rosemary isn’t in this recipe, but want to be sure any substitutes i use don’t include rosemary. I hope you can help as i have severely dry skin — yet live in the deep south, which may seem a strange place to have dry skin, but there it is lol. Many thanks.

Hi! So glad you are going to try the recipe! It will last for a few months, about 2-4, unless you use it all up by then which usually happens to me! You could add a little Vitamin E (about 1/2 tsp) to increase the shelf life. Hope this helps and let me know how you like the recipe!

Hi, great recipe, I cannot wait to try it. What is the shelf life of the whipped body butter? Is there something I can add to it to make it last longer?
Maryjane says

Hi Mary Jane,
I love your body butter recipe! I have tried a few but they were too hard. In fact they were so hard I should have put a wick in it and use as a candle lol. Your recipe is truly like butter and easy to apply.
Thank you!

Hi Janeen! You can use mango butter or kokum butter in place of cocoa butter, or just double the amount of shea butter. Hope this helps!

What can I use in place of cocoa butter

Hi Sue! I’m excited for you to try the recipes! You can replace the coconut oil with any oil – like jojoba, argan, rosehip seed, sweet almond, etc. They should all work!

Hello, I just found a few of your recipes. The first one was for anti-aging face moisturizer. I can’t wait to try this.
The second was for your whipped body butter. However, I am allergic to coconut oil. I can’t even be in the room if it is being used, let alone put on my skin.
Since I am very new to homemade products is there something else I can use instead of coconut oil. Could I use beeswax in place of the coconut oil?
Thanks,
