Most store-bought natural deodorants really don’t work. This DIY recipe is amazing and perfect for anyone with sensitive skin
I love a good homemade deodorant. Especially one that works! The trouble is, I have sensitive skin and the baking soda in most natural deodorants has really been irritating my pits. I’ve been playing around with different recipes and I finally found the ratio of ingredients that keeps the stink away. I’m excited to share this recipe with you, especially if you’ve been struggling with irritated underarms.
For more deodorant suggestions (store-bought and homemade) check out Three Natural Alternatives To Deodorant That Actually Work. I love and use all of the natural options mentioned in the post except for the homemade deodorant with baking soda. I just can’t deal with the irritated armpit action anymore!
Since dropping the baking soda my underarms feel so much better. This new recipe is actually extremely soothing on your pits and it helped to heal my underarms quickly. So if you can’t take your natural deodorant anymore you have to try this recipe.
Natural Ingredients for DIY Deodorant
The ingredients are pretty simple for this recipe. You will need Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Arrowroot Powder , your favorite Essential Oils, and a cute container to store it in. I have found that a combination of Melaleuca and Lemongrass works the best at odor prevention.
Melaleuca, or Tea Tree Oil, is widely known for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties. If I could take one thing with me on a deserted island, it would probably be melaleuca. Seriously, you can use it for everything! It’s great for cleaning out cuts and scrapes, it helps to soothe earaches, it makes pimples, warts and fungus disappear, it supports a healthy immune system – it’s a true miracle oil!
Lemongrass is another favorite, not only for the lovely smell, but for its antimicrobial and purifying properties. I love to diffuse Lemongrass to cleanse and purify my home so naturally, I decided to throw a little bit in my deodorant!
Play around with your favorite essential oil combinations. I think Geranium or Patchouli would also make a great addition. Leave a comment below if you have a combination that you love. I’m always looking for new blends.
Homemade Deodorant is Simple to Make and Lasts Forever
Once you have gathered all of your ingredients, it’s go time. Your new deodorant is just minutes away and the recipe couldn’t be any easier to make. To set up a double boiler, just add a little bit of water to a saucepan and bring it to a simmer. Place a glass bowl on top and you’re ready to add your ingredients.
The recipe makes about 2 ounces of deodorant which will last FOREVER. You won’t have to make it again for months. Yay to saving money! Store-bought natural deodorants ain’t cheap.
Stink test
I wore this deodorant all day and I was pleasantly surprised at how good I smelled at the end of the day. For extra sweaty hot days, I follow it up with this deodorant spray recipe for stinky pits. I also like to keep a little sample size container in my purse or bag for emergency purposes.
When I made the choice to switch to natural deodorant, I knew it wouldn’t be the same as conventional deodorants/antiperspirants that last all day. I’m okay with that!
I hope you enjoy this recipe. Comment below if you have another great recipe I should try!

I do have to reapply ( it is a hot summer), but that is no big deal!
Thank you!!
Oh yea, baking soda can be really harsh on the pits! Excited for you to try this recipe!!
I had to order the raw Shea butter and arrowroot powder to make this. I am excited to try it. I have bought “natural” deodorants before and the baking soda caused blisters in my arm pits and turned them black. I hope this works!!
