DIY Natural Lip Balm for Chapped Lips
I was pretty much known for my lip balm obsession back in the day. I think I had every chapstick on the market. And at the end of the day, I always had chapped lips!
A friend told me that you can get addicted to chapstick and lip balm and I believed it. My lips were constantly chapped. What was going on here?
Turns out I wasn’t addicted to lip balm, the lip balms were just completely drying my poor lips out.
Check out this article to understand why lip balm could actually make your chapped lips worse.
So basically, it’s all about the ingredients in your lip balm.
After inspecting some ingredients on natural lip balms, I decided to whip up my own and I have to say, it is super moisturizing on my lips! I only have to apply it once or maybe twice a day.
Goodbye Chapped Lips!
I used occlusive agents, which if you read the article above, create a physical barrier on your lips to prevent water loss. That’s the ticket! Keep the moisture in, not out!
I used a combination of coconut oil, beeswax, apricot kernel oil (sometimes I swap it out for my favorite argan oil) and essential oils.
The result is a super moisturizing lip balm with benefits. The benefits are you can use it for more than just chapped lips. I apply it under and around my eyes, on dry patches and also on my cuticles. I love a good multipurpose product!
I consider this my personal beauty balm because I like to use Rose Essential Oil when I make it. Rose is amazing for your skin! It promotes a healthy and even complexion, reduces scarring and imperfections and helps with redness.
If you don’t have or can’t afford Rose essential oil (it’s not cheap!), just use your favorite essential oil or combination of essential oils that you wouldn’t mind tasting (since it goes on your lips ya know?!)
Good essential oil combinations for DIY Lip Balm:
Peppermint + Wild Orange
Peppermint + Lemon
Lemon + Rosemary
Rosemary + Lavender
To Make Your Lip Balm
Melt 1 Tbsp coconut oil and 1 Tbsp beeswax in a double boiler. Let it cool for a few minutes and add in 1 tsp apricot kernel oil and about 20 drops of your favorite essential oils.
Pour into tubes (I love these eco-friendly tubes, only drawback is you have to buy in bulk) or a small tin like this one. Let harden and enjoy!
I hope you love this beauty balm/lip balm as much as I do. If you are vegan and want to make lip balm without beeswax, check out this recipe. Happy DIYing!

How long will this store for
Maryjane says
Yes! You can use candelilla wax – it’s not a 1:1 substitution though, cut it in half. So instead of 1 tbsp of beeswax, use 1/2 tbsp of candelilla wax.

Hi, Maryjane. LOVE the rose oil balm I purchased from your Etsy shop. I’m so addicted!! I was going to experiment with making a tin with other oils in my collection. I have a question: your instructions/ingredients above indicate just 4 ingredients; however, the tin itself lists 5 (coconut oil, beeswax, apricot kernel oil, rose essential oil, and FCO). How does the FCO factor into the recipe above? How much? When do you add it in? Please let me know! Thanks!!

Yesss! I agree! It’s such a great multiuse product. I have been using it on my son’s face to get rid of some redness too!

I’m constantly applying lip balm and it totally dries my lips out more! I love the idea of an all-natural product – and if you make it at home, you know exactly what you’re putting on your lips. Also, super cool that you can use it for skin, under eyes, etc. Love it!
