If you don’t know me yet, I am a DIY junkie. I love to experiment and make my own personal care and wellness products.
The most rewarding part is when they actually work!
Yes, sometimes when I make something it just totally bombs. That’s life, ya know?!
So when my son starting coughing and telling me his throat hurt, part of me just wanted to do the usual routine – probiotics, elderberry syrup, rub a few essential oils diluted on his chest.
But another part of me thought a soothing salve would be so perfect for him right now. There’s something about rubbing a salve on your skin (especially when someone else does it!) that is totally relaxing. Just like when Mom used to rub Vicks on your chest.
Time for Mama to whip up a new DIY, don’t you think?!
The best part about this home remedy is that it actually works. As soon as I rubbed it on his neck and throat (he’s 11, I wouldn’t recommend this for children under 5, stick to the bottom of the feet) the congestion started to break up and he was able to blow his nose and start getting all the gunk out.
One day later and he’s barely coughing. That’s a win in my book!
So while you are sorting through the many home remedies for coughs, put this one on the top of your list.
How to make a DIY Cough and Sore Throat Salve
This is one of the easiest DIYs to make. You will be melting together coconut oil and beeswax over a double boiler, letting it cool and then adding five different essential oils.
The Most Essential Oil
Eucalyptus is the standout essential oil in this recipe. Just smell the oil and you will know! You absolutely must use Eucalyptus for this salve. Real, sustainably sourced Eucalyptus Essential Oil.
The other four essential oils are Lemon, Thyme, Rosemary and Tea Tree. These oils are just powerhouses when it comes to colds, congestion or even the flu (read A Beginner’s Guide to Using Essential Oils for Congestion for more about that). They are naturally anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Just what Dr. Mom ordered.
How to use your DIY Cough and Congestion Salve
Once your DIY cough salve has cooled and it’s ready to use, rub a little bit on your chest. You can do this several times throughout the day.
I like to rub it on my 11-year old’s upper back before he goes to bed. He loves it too! For my 7-year old, we rub it on the bottoms of his feet and just a smidge on his back.
This recipe is a must for busting coughs and sore throats. Make it today!

- Melt the coconut oil and beeswax over a double boiler. Let cool for a few minutes, then add the essential oils. Whisk to combine. Pour into a 4-ounce glass container and place it in the fridge for about 5-10 minutes to harden. For older children and adults apply to chest and neck as needed. For small children, apply to the bottoms of the feet.
Note: Please do your research on essential oils. You want to use high quality, therapeutic-grade essential oils. I would not recommend using this on children under five years old.
