DIY Anti-Aging Moisturizer
A beautiful, creamy face moisturizer that helps with wrinkles, fine lines and age spots. With only four ingredients, it’s super easy to make and perfect for aging skin.

Homemade Face Cream for Aging Skin
I am obsessed with making my own skincare products. But mainly I’m obsessed with making my own skincare products that work just as well, if not better, than any expensive store-bought cream on the market.
I like to make my own products for a few reasons. First, I know exactly what is in them. Even the most natural companies can throw a few shady ingredients in here and there.
Second, my skin is healthier. Since I started making my own skincare products I have noticed a huge difference in my complexion. My face is not dry at all and I went from combination skin (dry cheeks, oily forehead) to completely normal and even skin.
Third, I can customize my skincare products with essential oils. This is my favorite part! I have so many amazing essential oils that promote healthy, glowing skin right at my fingertips. These five essential oils for beautiful skin are probably my favorites to play around with.
Fourth, you are saving a ton of money by making your own products! It costs a little bit up front to get your oils and butters, but once you have them you can make your products 20 times over! It’s an amazing way to save money.
I love this face cream in particular because it helps with..ahem..aging skin. Wrinkles, fine lines, age spots will soften and lighten because of the amazing ingredients involved (more anti-aging tips at the end of the post).
Let’s get into the ingredients of this awesome face cream.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is the base ingredient (of course). I am so obsessed with shea butter because it is a skincare game changer!
It is sooo good for dry skin and as we age we definitely lose a lot of moisture in our skin. It’s rich in vitamins A and E, super moisturizing and anti-inflammatory. A true skin gem!
Argan Oil
Argan oil was the first oil I tried on my face and it rocked my world! It has a comedogenic rating of 0 which means it won’t clog pores, so it’s great for acne-prone skin.
It turns out Argan oil is also awesome for aging skin. Who knew! It’s really good for softening wrinkles and fine lines and it’s super hydrating for dry skin.
I’ve been using this brand from the very beginning and I absolutely love it.
Essential Oils
Like I mentioned above, this is the fun part! Essential oils are another game-changing ingredient for our skin. Aside from the lovely fragrance, they help with wrinkles, age spots, hydration, pimples.. and the list goes on. They are essentially what helped me kick melasma to the curb!

The hard part is figuring out which essential oils to add. I like a combination of Lavender and Frankincense for anti-aging. Other great options are Melaleuca, Helichrysum, or Rose. I like to add about 10-15 drops total to my face cream. That could be too much for you (or too little), so start with 5-10 drops and see how you do.
Always do a patch test if you are trying a new essential oil on your skin. Even though they are natural, you can still have a sensitivity to a certain oil. Check out the chart below to figure out which essential oils would be good for you!
Let’s do it!
Alright, so now that you have all the ingredients, let’s make our homemade face cream!
- add about 1/4 cup shea butter to a small bowl and mash it with the back of a spoon until it’s creamy (or use this mini food chopper – I just started using it and it’s amazing!)
- add 2 Tbsp of argan oil and mix it together really well.
- add in your essential oils of choice and combine well again.
- transfer the cream to a 4-ounce glass container.
- DONE!
A Few Natural Remedies for Anti-Aging
So aside from using the DIY anti-aging moisturizer (that you just made, right?!), there are a few natural remedies for anti-aging that I like to include in my daily skincare routine.
Better than Botox Face Mask
This face mask with hibiscus powder is life-changing. Hibiscus is known as the “botox plant” – need I say more?
Face Yoga
One of the best natural, anti-aging secrets is face yoga. I have been following the face yoga method program for years and it has done wonders for my skin, posture and stress levels.
I started with these five poses and I noticed a difference within a few days.
I try to incorporate face yoga into my daily routine. I never realized how much stress and tension I hold in my face, jaw and shoulders. Face yoga helps me recognize where and when I’m holding tension and I can immediately release it. I will never stop doing face yoga!
Gua Sha
Gua sha is incredible! I received a gua sha in my detox box about 2 years ago and I had no clue what that funny-shaped rose quartz stone was. After googling and watching a few tutorials on youtube, I was hooked.
A gua sha stone (I have a few and this one is the absolute best!) is great for sculpting and lifting your skin. It really helps with circulation and gets the lymphatic system going (and draining!) so you look less puffy and more radiant. It’s also super relaxing to use after a long day – I can not recommend this tool enough.
This magical gua sha stone by Wilding Beauty is my favorite. It has a comb edge that helps to erase and smooth fine lines and the u-shape is perfect for gliding and lifting the jaw and cheekbones. I’m obsessed!!
Aging gracefully is where it’s at!
It’s not always about “reversing the signs of aging” – I feel that it’s about accepting where you are and loving yourself unconditionally. I’m 43 years old and I don’t want to look like I’m 23, that would just be weird!
I want to feel and look like the best 43-year-old woman that I can be. And I personally feel like my skin looks way better now than it did in my 20s. I don’t obsess over it either. I just want to feel good. That’s it.
Making natural skincare products, doing face yoga and gua sha make me feel great. I hope you try it all and feel great too!
p.s – I hope you love this DIY moisturizer as much as I do. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Awesome Doris! Let me know what you think!
Will try, love the oils and shea butter.
Yes absolutely! Just melt it low and slow:)
Can you use a double boiler to mix the ingredients instead of mashing it with the back of your spoon?
Yay!! I’m so glad you love it!!

Thank you so much!!! I made this today and I am head over heels excited!! (I made your dry shampoo as well and love that too!!)
Hi Marsha! I get everything from Amazon. You can find all of the links under the “let’s do it!” section of the post. Hope this helps!
xo Maryjane
Where do you get your supplies to make this moisturizer?
Thank yoir
absolutely!
hmmm, sometimes that can happen with shea butter. Try adding a little more shea butter and melting it down over a double boiler on very low heat, then put it in the fridge right away for a half-hour or so. That should help with the graininess.
You’re welcome!
I buy my Shea butter from an African shop, can I use that in this recipe?
My recipe is quite grainy, and very oily.
What would cause this?
Thank you for sharing that detail. It was fascinating and insightful. Continue to share useful resources over these blogs…
That’s great, Thank for sharing this recipe
Hi Lena! I’m so glad you are going to try the recipe! It will keep for about 2 months. I store mine in my medicine cabinet, no need for refrigeration. Let me know how you like it!
xo Maryjane
This sounds amazing. Just wondering how to store it and how long can you keep the cream. Thanks so much ?
Hi Elline! Yes, you can definitely substitute avocado oil for argan – lots of great benefits with that oil too:)

You are so welcome! I’m glad you found the post!!

Hi Mary
Can I substitute avocado oil for the argan oil? I live in the sticks and struggle to find the argan oil.
Thanks so much!
Hi! You could replace the Argan Oil with Jojoba Oil if you feel like it might break you out. I have acne-prone skin and I never had a problem with Argan Oil – but everybody is different so you have to test it out for yourself! You could also add a few drops of Tea Tree Oil to help with your acne. Also take a look at this post https://nativesoulbeauty.com/the-best-oil-facial-cleanser-recipe-and-why-oil-cleansing-rocks/ – oil cleansing helped my skin clear up! Hope this helps!

I’m so glad that I seen ur recipe but I have acne problem so can u suggest what are all ingredients to add for this recipe Thank you
Hi! If you have oily skin you can probably just get away with the DIY face serum! If your skin is drier in the winter months then switch to the diy anti-aging moisturizer – you can use it alone or apply it over the serum. Maybe try it both ways and see how your skin does? Also, your skin might become more balanced and less oily once you start using face oils and shea butter instead of the harsher products. Let me know how it works out!
Hi! I think that might ruin the consistency – you can mix by hand or in a mini food processor!
Hi,
I have oily skin so can I use Shea butter or would you recommend something else? Also can we use this cream after your DIY face serum with jojoba , rosehip , tamanu and the EO’s? Thanks a ton!
Hey there! Can I mix this with a blender or will that ruin the consistency?
Hi Concetta! You can definitely substitute mango butter for shea. Let me know how it turns out!
xo Maryjane
I would like to try to make this moisturizer but I’d like to know if I can substitute mango butter for the shea butter.
Thank you for the info! I have used cocoa butter on my face with no problem, but this is great to know!
Actually cocoa butter can cause facial tissue to breakout. I’ve experienced this myself and check out info here: https://www.verywellhealth.com/will-cocoa-butter-remove-acne-marks-15592
I’d highly recommend sticking with Shea butter.
So glad you are going to try it!! It will last about 1-2 months. Let me know how it turns out!
Hi! To be on the safe side about 1-2 months:)
Hello,
Thank you for this wonderful face cream recipe. I am going to start trying it out today. How long can this last in the jar? I looked for the answer but didn’t find it. Thank you again. Blessings!
HI Maryjane, How long will it last before danger of fungi, bacteria or any contamination due to not having any preservatives in it? thank you
Hi! Yes, that’s excellent. Myrrh is amazing for the skin! Good luck!
Hi. I was only able to find Frankincense and Myrrh essential oil for the moisturizer recipe. I assume this will work as well as plain Frankincense essential oil?? Thanks for getting back to me.
I’m so glad you are trying it! I was in the same boat. My skin has improved so much from using natural products. Let me know how it turns out! xo Maryjane
So excited to try this. I’m in my 40s, my skin is aging and I’m struggling with hyperpigmentation. After trying so many different products and spending a lot on skincare brands that might have done so little even harmful to my skin, I’m resolute to try natural, healthy, simple and homemade skincare product . Thank you for sharing your ideas and keep up posting.
Hi Mary! Shea butter is VERY helpful for dry skin. I would suggest using a mixture of shea butter and argan oil without the essential oils because sometimes they can dry out skin. You can spot treat any brown spots after you moisturize with a little dab of Frankincense or Lavender.
yes absolutely! And it will smell amazing!
Hello, my name is Mary. I am 57 and have a thyroid issue. Brown spots and very dry skin is really getting out of control with me. I want to do things the healthy way to help.
Hi- Can I use cocoa butter instead of shea butter for this?
Thank you 🙂
Mary that’s great to hear!!
Hi! Give this shea butter a try – you can use it right out of the jar!
I love this! I noticed that when I put it on at night I sleep so much better. I have been getting much more deep sleep since using this.
Love the idea, but I’m time lacking. Any chance anyone would like to make some for me?? Or recommend a product with similar ingredients? I’m at a loss at this point.
Yay! Let me know what you think! xo Maryjane
Can’t wait to get mine made and start using it! Thanks
Hello! Either one is fine. I tend to use it more at night because it takes a little while to absorb.
Hi! I would like to know when can I used it…. at night or in the morning
You’re welcome! So glad you found the recipe and yes I believe shea butter does offer sun protection. A win-win!
Shea butter is so great for our skin plus I believe the spf factor is around 15? Great product! Thank you for sharing this recipe.
no! you can always add more of the other ingredients if it feels too strong on your skin:)
I accidentally wrote this down wrong and added double the EO. Is it ruined?
