Homemade Deodorant Spray for Stinky Pits
It seems like the biggest struggle when you go natural is finding a good deodorant that works. It definitely has been tough for me to find one that I love.
A while ago, I shared my simple homemade deodorant recipe for sensitive skin, and while I do love this recipe, I find that I have to apply it more than once a day. I’m pretty lazy so that wasn’t really working for me!
I also received some feedback and it turns out that not everyone loves applying a paste to their pits. Who knew!
A spray seemed like the obvious answer. I was just planning on using it to compliment my homemade deodorant paste, but now I find that on most days, it’s all I need.
I love how refreshing this spray feels on my pits (is that weird?) and it’s super easy to keep in your purse for those times when you need to freshen up.
Homemade Natural Deodorant Spray Ingredients
The base ingredients of the spray are Witch Hazel and Vegetable Glycerin.
The rest of the ingredients are…wait for it…essential oils!
I found a mix of Rosemary, Frankincense and Lavender work great at keeping my pits nice and refreshed.
Lavender is antimicrobial and antibacterial, exactly what we need to keep our pits smelling fresh. Rosemary is antibacterial and will help to extend the life of our spray, keeping it good for weeks, even months! Frankincense (replace with Tea Tree if you can’t swing the big bucks for this one!) acts as an astringent and is king when it comes to killing bacteria.
How to Make your Natural Deodorant Spray
This one is pretty simple. In a small bowl whisk together:
- 1/4 cup Witch Hazel
- 1 tsp Vegetable Glycerin
- 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
- 5 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
- 5 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
Add the mixture to a 2-ounce spray bottle like this one.
Mission deodorant spray complete!

Thank you for posting! This works! And I’ve been trying everything. All day, no smell❤

Hi! Nope, just witch hazel as the base:) You could definitely add distilled water if you don’t have enough witch hazel to make the recipe though!

I have a question. Do you not add distilled water to this recipe ?
Maryjane Cartmell says
How did it work out for you? I may have gotten used to the sticky feeling because I don’t notice it at all!

I made this spray the other day, so I don’t want to complain too much yet, but I feel as if it is sticky… I’m assuming it’s the vegetable glycerin? I used the same brand as you. And measuring cups. So I wonder if my skin just isn’t used to it yet…
I’ll check back in in a week or so.
Thanks for the recipe!

You can probably do without it. I believe it helps the ingredients “stick” a little more, but I’m sure it would work just fine without the vegetable glycerin.

Do you need to use the vegetable glycerin? I have all the ingredients but that one. I was wondering what the purpose of that ingredient was. If it’s necessary, I’ll purchase it, but if not, I’d like to just make it sooner rather than later, especially for my 8 and 13 year old.

Thanks Amanda, I hope you like it. It’s one of my favorites!

Penny, a little bit of both! If you don’t like Lavender you can substitute another oil, like tea tree or just add more Rosemary!

Hello! Thank you for directing me to your site! (I’m sunlily2003 on IG). I was wondering if you use more lavender because if it’s beneficisl properties or because you like the smell? I’m asking because I hate lavender 🙁

I’m so glad you posted this! I have been trying different natural deodorants for a while and they all seem to irritate my skin. This one looks so easy — and the fewer ingredients the better! I can’t wait to make some for myself. Thank you so much for sharing, Maryjane!
