A simple makeup brush cleaner recipe made with all natural ingredients. You will kick yourself for not trying this sooner!
Homemade Makeup Brush Cleaner
Cleaning your makeup brushes regularly is a must for beautiful skin. Dirty brushes could cause breakouts, allergies, skin irritations and all sorts of yucky stuff that we beauties want to avoid.
I use this simple homemade recipe to clean my brushes weekly and it does a great job. It is easy to make – and the best part is you are avoiding all of the harsh chemicals in typical store-bought cleaners.
This recipe will last through several cleanings, so feel free to double or triple it depending on how often you clean your brushes.
Step 1: Gather your supplies.
Distilled Water
Using distilled water extends the life of your cleaner, as opposed to using regular tap water. You can pick up a gallon at your local supermarket.
Witch Hazel
You may already have this amazing natural cleanser in your cabinet. If not, pick up my favorite bottle right here.
Liquid Castile Soap
I buy a few big bottles of Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap at a time from Amazon. This soap is a wonder! We use it to make hand soap, laundry detergent and so much more. You can literally clean your whole house, top to bottom, with just water and castile soap! It is a must-have for natural cleaning recipes!
Essential Oils
Aside from making everything smell incredible, essential oils have amazing purifying properties which makes them a great add-in for natural cleaners. Essential oils are very concentrated so a little goes a long way. I buy mine from doTERRA in 15 ml size and they last forever!
You always want to use the best essential oils available, even with cleaning your makeup brushes. I add them to my recipe, but you can make it without them if you don’t have essential oils yet. I highly recommend getting yourself a few for cleaning because they will make your cleaning products so much more effective!

Step 2: Combine all of your ingredients in a mason jar.
1 cup distilled water
1/2 cup witch hazel
2 tsp castile soap
5-10 drops essential oils (I recommend Tea Tree and Geranium)
Step 3: Shake it up and get ready to clean your brushes!
Pour a little bit into a small bowl and swirl your brushes around to clean them, rinse off excess makeup under water and lay them out to dry.

Alternately, once your cleaner is all mixed up you can add it to a small spray bottle (if you find it easier to clean your brushes that way).
Just spray your brushes, rinse them under warm water and then squeeze all of the water out until it runs clear. Definitely try this method if you’re lazy about cleaning your brushes!
