Managing Your Period The Natural Way
How annoying is it that we get our periods every. single. month? Every month! Just had to put it out there. If you’re reading this it means you probably have a not so light period with a side of nasty PMS. Blah!
Well, I’ve discovered a few little tricks and tips along the way to make your period much more comfortable and bearable. You might actually look forward to getting it every month. Well probably not, but I’m so excited for you to try one or all of the recommendations on my list so I’m laying it on a little thick.
Enough small talk, let’s get to it.
Essential Oils
Hands down, essential oils are going to be your number one helper when it comes to a more comfortable period. Essential oils are amazing for balancing mood swings (hello PMS) and also for pain, whether it’s headaches, cramps or sore muscles.

Using essential oils for menstrual cramps is pretty straightforward. You apply them directly to the area of discomfort with a little bit of carrier oil.
My favorite essential oils for period cramps are Fennel, Lavender, Clary Sage and Peppermint. I like to combine them in a roller (about 5 drops each and fill the rest with carrier oil) and roll it over my abdomen when cramps hit.
I like to break out my period cramps essential oil roller when PMS hits. I apply it to my wrists, back of neck and abdomen a few times a day. It will help balance your mood and keep you cool as a cucumber. I also apply it to my breasts when they are really sore during PMS. So helpful!
I also started using Copaiba essential oil, which is amazing for inflammation and soothing pain. Sometimes I’ll add a drop or two to my period cramps roller and it helps so much.
Three Essential Oil Blends Everyone Needs
If you prefer buying individual oils and making your own blends, you have to try my favorite mood-balancing blend. It’s great for PMS, but I tend to use it all the time!
Here’s the recipe:
20 drops Lavender
20 drops Bergamot
15 drops Clary Sage
10 drops Sweet Orange
Add the essential oils to a 10 ml roller and fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil.
Apply to your wrists, back of the neck and behind your ears. Then take a few big inhales from whatever is leftover on your fingers. Heaven!
If you experience a lot of head tension before or during your period, try this head soothing roller blend:
20 drops Deep Blue essential oil blend
20 drops Peppermint
10 drops Frankincense
10 drops Lavender
Add the essential oils to a 10 ml roller and fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil.
Apply to wrists, swipe across your forehead and rub into temples (be very very careful NOT to get it near your eyes). Keep taking big inhales of the blend from your wrists.
If you’re more into using a diffuser try my Calm Mommy Blend. Three drops each of Lavender, Bergamot and Clary Sage is every Mama’s self-care in a diffuser.

A few other things…
Try a Menstrual Cup
I ditched tampons a few years ago and I haven’t turned back since. My favorite girl Tracy, of The Love Vitamin, turned me onto using a menstrual cup. I was definitely skeptical at first (and the first month was not pretty – a little bit of a learning curve here) but after a month or two I was hooked.
This is the one I use and I love love love it. You can leave it in for up to 12 hours ladies!
It has been so lovely not buying tampons, let me tell ya. It’s also super easy when you go somewhere because you don’t have to worry about stuffing your purse with pads and tampons.
I have also heard about something called a flex disc that I might have to try. If anyone has used it please comment below or email me, I would love to hear a review!
Period Underwear Rocks!
Pretty underwear with a built-in pad. Need I say more?
Must must must must have ladies! I bought my first pair of period underwear a few months ago and man I wish I bought them sooner. They can hold up to TWO tampons worth and I know it seems kinda gross, like you’ll be sitting in a pool of blood all day, but you won’t! It gets absorbed quickly and you will barely notice it. You have to try these, it’s a must.
Calm tea, yes please!
I make Calm tea A LOT. It is amazing for sleep and it tastes really yummy. I recently tried it before bed when I had really bad cramps and it was extra soothing.
