How to use essential oils: my Fall and Winter essential oil routine
I know lots of people who own essential oils and are afraid to use them or just aren’t sure how to incorporate them into a daily routine. I’m going to break down how to use essential oils every day and give you some ideas and tips to make it as simple as possible.
Essential oils have become pretty common and trendy and for good reason. They are an incredible, natural, affordable option for us mamas! If my kid is complaining of stomach discomfort, I just whip out an oil and he is better instantly. You can’t beat that! The amount of money we have saved on copays and prescriptions is unreal.
So why in the world should you care about my essential oils routine?
Well, for one (and the biggest game-changer for our family), doctor visits are few and far between. There was a time, about five or six years ago when my son and I were at the doctor and specialists a few times a month. I was a teacher at the time and I used up all of my sick days and family sick days. I felt like this was our new normal.
Fast forward five years and now my family and I are now the healthiest we have ever been. My skin has totally transformed (thanks to all of my homemade beauty products) and the mood swings aren’t swinging as much. The only time we head to the doc is for well visits, not sick visits.
Two, I’m hoping to inspire you to use your essential oils and not let them go to waste. The amazingness in each bottle is not something that should be sitting on a shelf, never to be touched. USE THEM CONSISTENTLY and you will see results.
I am not an expert. I’m just a mom of two boys trying to make healthy decisions for our family every day. I learned how to use essential oils by researching the heck out of them, through trial and error and by asking trusted friends. I use them safely and carefully and we see results on a consistent basis. They work, you just have to use them.
I started out with a little kit of the top ten essential oils from doTERRA and they are still the oils I use most often. Best $150 I ever spent! One of the many things I love about doTERRA is the amazing blends they put together. Whatever you need – calming, grounding, uplifting, pain relief – you name it, they have a blend for it! I use A LOT of their blends throughout the day. You can visit my essential oils page to check out essential oils and blends I mention below.
Let’s get into my fall and winter essential oil routine
The number one, numero uno, most important thing to do is to KEEP YOUR OILS OUT. When I first bought my essential oil kit, I kept them in the box because they looked so pretty in there. Can you guess how often I used them? Not much.
Then I started to keep them out, in places where I was using them the most. I started to use them much more consistently. Good spots to keep them are on your nightstand, in the bathroom or on the kitchen counter. If you don’t like clutter, I get it, I don’t either. Just find yourself a really cute case and they will look like a pretty decoration on the counter.
Another important thing to remember is we are all about prevention. We want to prevent the illnesses from happening. Yes, you or your kids might still get sick. My family does too from time to time. But nothing, not even close to the horrible respiratory viruses and infections we used to get. It’s very minimal and easy to get over because we are always oiling.
As I mentioned above, all of the essential oils and essential oil blends I mention in the post are from doTERRA. Instead of linking each oil you can go to my doTERRA shop here and look up oils and blends.
Here’s a breakdown of a typical day
Morning
I always start the day with Balance grounding blend on my wrists and back of neck. I like to take a few big inhales and just give myself a few minutes to get my bearings and think about the day. I keep it on my dresser so I remember to use it. Remember what I said earlier? Keep your essential oils where you use them!
Next, I’ll put a few dabs of Frankincense on any spots or scars on my face
On school days I like to start diffusing right away. I add uplifting and grounding essential oils to the diffuser so my kids feel calm and relaxed before school. My favorite combination is Balance and Wild Orange (Wellness Bonus: Wild Orange helps support healthy immune function and kills germs in the air).
I use my anxiety roller most days and if one of my kids seems a little upset or tense I’ll roll a bit on the back of their neck as well. I use about ten drops of each oil in the image below and fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil.
Using Essential Oils Throughout the Day
I always spray down the countertops with my homemade cleaner that currently has Lavender and Lemon mixed in – so relaxing while I’ll clean.
Once I start working I’ll add a few drops of Holiday Joy to the diffuser. I LOVE THIS BLEND! I can not even describe how good it smells. It’s only available from doTERRA during November and I usually stock up a few bottles so I can diffuse it all winter long. Email me to snag a bottle!
Late afternoon I like to run the diffuser again with Peppermint and Wild Orange for some uplifting vibes because that’s usually the time of day I’m dragging. I love adding Wild Orange to the diffuser because you get the added immune-boosting and air purifying benefits as I mentioned above- and it smells so good! My kids are coming from school at this time with lots of germs so a purifying essential oil is a must.
Evening
After dinner and our nightly wind down (sometimes with Lavender in the diffuser), I break out my immune-boosting roller. This is my most important tool to keep us healthy all winter long. The roller is made up of a combination of Oregano, Melaleuca, Lemon and On Guard. I like to roll it down my kids’ spines before bed. I do this for about 2 weeks consistently and then I’ll take a little break. You can learn exactly how I make this roller in this post.
If the kids seem a little energetic and not so sleepy, I’ll put a drop of Lavender or Serenity on their sheets or pillowcase to get them relaxed and ready for a good night of sleep. If anyone is feeling under the weather I will run the diffuser with a few drops of On Guard and Frankincense. I can pretty much guarantee they will feel much better in the morning.
Now it’s my turn!
I like to massage my face with Argan Oil (grab my favorite brand here) and a drop of Frankincense, Lavender or one of my other favorite skin oils. This is so relaxing and probably my favorite part of the day. Read about the five essential oils that transformed my skin here.
Then I give myself a foot massage with a calming oil like Lavender, Frankincense or Cedarwood (or a combination of all three!) and right before bed I’ll put a drop or two of Lavender (are you seeing a pattern here??) in my hands, rub them together and take a few big inhales. This helps me get an amazing night of sleep.
