How is a sinus steamer going to help me?
All the respiratory issues are in full swing right now and the last thing anyone wants is lingering congestion that won’t go away. Ugh, the worst.
About eight years ago my family and I started dabbling in essential oils. My son, who was three at the time, was getting sick week after week and I knew there had to be an alternative to over-the-counter meds and antibiotics. Something his little body could handle.
A good friend introduced me to essential oils and we haven’t turned back since.
My skeptic husband wasn’t too eager to jump on the bandwagon. But then he caught a cold and was super congested. I convinced him to try out this remedy and it worked SO well that he recommends it to his friends and family now!
This is probably the greatest thing to happen to our household. No more mystery ingredient pharmaceuticals for us. Just some hot water and essential oils!
Combine this with my DIY Cough and Sore Throat Salve and we are good to go!
What You Will Need for a Sinus Steamer
Four essential oils are needed for this remedy – Lemon, Tea Tree, Oregano and Peppermint.
Lemon helps to break up the congestion and mucus, Oregano and Tea Tree work together for immune support and Peppermint is going to open up your airways.
If you are new to essential oils and you need to buy them, do a little research before you buy. Stick with a company that is very transparent about how and where they source their essential oils so you know what you are getting. We always want to use essential oils that are completely pure and potent and most importantly, sourced from where the plant grows naturally.
The majority of my essential oils tend to come from doTERRA because I have a wholesale membership (and I love their blends!), but there are definitely some oils they don’t offer that I really want in my collection. I don’t believe that you have to use only one brand! I also use Aura Cacia , Eden’s Garden, and Amrita Aromatherapy but doTERRA’s quality is the highest I have come across so far.
Alright, so here’s what you are going to do to get rid of a cold fast
I love this natural solution, also known as a sinus steamer, for stuffy noses and congestion because you don’t have to apply the oils topically, you are simply inhaling them!
Step one: Boil some water and break out one of your favorite mugs. While the water is boiling, add ONE drop of each oil to the mug. That’s one drop each of Peppermint, Melaleuca, Oregano and Lemon.
Step two: Add the boiling water to your mug. Easy peasy.
Step three: Brace yourself. Close your eyes – very important! Get your face right into that steam. Inhale several times.
Step four: Blow your nose.
Step five: Repeat steps three and four!
Do this a few times a day and you will feel much, much better. I always recommend making an essential oil roller for immune support and using it on your feet daily in conjunction with the sinus steamer.

Clara, thank you so much! xo Maryjane
Yes! I haven’t tried zinc yet, but I’m a big fan of apple cider vinegar. Cheers to staying healthy this winter!
Great tips! I’ll have to try that next tip. I’m also a fan of gargling with apple cider vinegar and taking zinc (usually I’ll put droplets in my smoothie).
That sounds like a great idea, I’ll try that when the next cold hits me. You have a beautiful website by the way 🙂
