Homemade Deodorant is Tricky
It’s no secret that most deodorants and antiperspirants are full of some pretty yucky chemicals. When I started to makeover my medicine and beauty cabinet with healthier options, I knew deodorant was one of the first items I had to ditch.
Think about it: we shave our armpits and then rub a smelly stick of questionable chemicals all over the area. More specifically, an area that contains our lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are a major player in our immune system and what keeps us healthy, so let’s not mess with them!
I’ve tried many natural deodorants and I’m sure you have the same feelings as me – they are hit or miss. I’ve made several too and one of my favorites is my Deodorant Recipe for Stinky Pits. It’s really refreshing and a good supplement to your daily natural deodorant.
I’ve used this homemade deodorant recipe for sensitive skin because any recipe with baking soda really irritates my armpits, but it’s definitely hit or miss.
Deodorant with Essential Oils for the Win!
Finding a good substitute for deodorant takes A LOT of trial and error and a WHOLE LOT of stinky pit action. It’s also a very personal thing. What works well with one person’s body might not work well for another. A universal component that seems to work well for everyone’s pits is essential oils – and specifically Sandalwood Essential Oil.
From Nadine Artemis, owner of Living Libations (a fave!) writing about Sandalwood Essential Oil:
“This ancient, amorous aromatic also contains a botanical pheromone similar to androsterone, the underarm pheromone secretion that acts as a sexual signal. This makes it a dashing deodorant that is super effective by simply applying a drop to charm each armpit.”
Doesn’t that sound like something you want in your life!?
Which essential oils are we using in our homemade deodorant?
This deodorant with essential oils is based on the Living Libations Poetic Pits deodorant and I kid you not, it’s absolutely amazing!
If you’re not into DIY then definitely try Poetic Pits, but if you’re like me and you have essential oils laying around, make your own.
The three essential oils we are using in this recipe are Sandalwood, Douglas Fir and Cardamom. If you don’t have these essential oils in your collection yet, now is a great time to get them!
Not only will you love these essential oils for our deodorant recipe, but they come in handy for different situations.
Sandalwood is a beautiful oil to add to your skincare recipes and it’s also super grounding. It’s perfect to use for stress-related issues.
Cardamom is good for respiratory support and also digestive support. It’s a great replacement for peppermint if you have little ones with tummy or respiratory troubles.
Douglas Fir has an amazingly fresh scent that I absolutely adore. It’s another essential oil that provides support to the respiratory system. I love to diffuse Douglas Fir. It’s really uplifting!
These three essential oils create a beautiful synergy and the best part is they work with your body’s own natural fragrance to create a scent that’s unique to you.
My husband and I both use this essential oil deodorant and it smells different on each of us. We get so many compliments when we wear it too!
How to Make Your Own Deodorant
This homemade deodorant recipe is simple to make. You are just going to add the essential oils to a 5 ml or 10 ml roller bottle. That’s it!
Here’s the recipe:
50 drops Sandalwood
25 drops Douglas Fir
10 drops Cardamom
Shake it up and it’s ready to go! To apply, just do one swipe on each armpit and rub it in.
Note that we are not adding any carrier oil to this recipe. If you have very sensitive armpits you could add a little bit of fractionated coconut oil. As I mentioned earlier, I am very sensitive to baking soda in deodorants and I use this essential oil deodorant undiluted with no problems. Test it out and see how you do!
Are you ready to make your own deodorant?
I hope you give this recipe a try! As I said before, finding a homemade or natural deodorant that works is tough. I am so happy I gave this recipe a try because it works so well. I hope you have the same results!
