DIY Beauty and Skincare Products (for beginners!)
There are a few homemade beauty products that I love to make myself because I can customize them with essential oils based on my skin’s needs. They are all super simple and easy to make which is always a bonus in my book!

Do you ever think about the ingredients in your personal care products? I like to know exactly what I’m putting on my body because don’t forget, the skin is our largest organ and what goes ON goes IN (think nicotine patches).
What we put on our skin is as important as what we eat! It’s good to be an ingredient inspector when you are buying personal care products. Check out this resource for a list of products you should be wary of.
Buying the perfect storage containers is a must when you are making homemade beauty products. Glass is the best and having different size options along with waterproof labels that come with this kit couldn’t be more perfect.
Essential Oils for the Win!
Essential oils are a key ingredient in a lot of homemade beauty products because they are so beneficial to the skin. They help to improve skin issues safely, without any harsh chemicals or preservatives. You can customize your products based on your skin’s needs and also on the type of scent you are looking for.
My favorite three essential oils for soothing and renewing the skin are:
Lavender
Lavender is very soothing to the skin and promotes healing. It is balancing and hydrating to the skin as well. Lavender is amazing for any type of skin irritation, bug bites, burns, and itching.
Frankincense
When in doubt, use Frankincense! This one is my favorite because it is great for aging skin (yes, I’m not as young as I used to be). Frankincense helps to smooth wrinkles and fade scars and stretch marks. It is amazing for skin renewal.
Tea Tree
Tea Tree oil is a must-have in your skin and haircare collection. It helps with pimples, cuts, scrapes, itchy skin and scalp and so much more.
Other essential oils to consider adding to your collection are Geranium, Rosemary and Helichrysum, which are all great for skin soothing, healing and renewal. Read all about essential oils for beautiful skin.
Essential Oil Beauty Recipes
One important thing to remember is that there are no preservatives in homemade beauty products, which means they do not have a long shelf life. For that reason, I like to make small batches that will last a few weeks. If you have leftovers add them to another jar and gift it to a friend!
Once you have all of the ingredients, the recipes are super easy to whip up again. Remember, I’m all about simple. If it’s too complicated, I’m not making it.
Here are my favorite simple, easy homemade beauty recipes with essential oils.
Dry Shampoo
1 Tbsp Arrowroot Powder
1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder (if you have dark hair)
5 Drops Rosemary Essential Oil
5 Drops Lavender Essential Oil
5 Drops Cedarwood Essential Oil
Combine the arrowroot and cocoa powder in a small container (I like to use a salt shaker – link). Add the essential oils and shake it up. Apply to the roots of your hair and spread it through with a big makeup brush.
Skin Soothing Cream
⅓ Cup Coconut Oil (extra-virgin, unrefined)
⅓ Cup Raw Shea Butter
5 Drops Frankincense Essential Oil
5 Drops Lavender Essential Oil
5 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
Heat the coconut oil and shea butter until melted and let cool, but don’t let it harden. Add the essential oils and stir. Pour into a glass jar and let harden. Use this cream on dry skin, itchy skin, eczema, any type of skin irritation, or as a moisturizer!
I have an entire post all about how awesome this cream is. Read it here.
Eyebrow Enhancer
Castor Oil ( or any carrier oil)
Rosemary Essential Oil
Lavender Essential Oil
Add a drop of Castor Oil (known for helping with hair growth) and one each drop of Rosemary and Lavender essential oil to your palm and mix together. Rub through your eyebrows. Do this every night to see results!
Bonus tip: add a drop or two of Lavender essential oil to your mascara tube – not only will this help preserve it, but your eyelashes will also get a treatment every time you use it!
DIY Face Mask
About 1 Tbsp Manuka Honey
1-3 Drops Essential Oil of choice
Add honey and essential oils to your palm and mix together. Spread all over for your face for a soothing face mask. Leave on for 15 minutes and wipe off with a soft, damp washcloth. Read all about the benefits of Manuka Honey for your skin. It’s truly a wonder!
Body Scrub
½ Cup Sugar
1/4 Cup Carrier Oil (Coconut Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil or Sweet Almond Oil)
10-15 Drops Favorite Essential Oil (I like to use Lime, Eucalyptus, Lavender or Grapefruit)
Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container. I love this amazing set of containers for storing all of my concoctions. You can also check out my cellulite busting body scrub which is perfect for summer!
A Few Natural Beauty Tips
Coconut oil is an amazing eye makeup remover. Massage a tiny bit around your eye area and wipe off with a warm washcloth.
Instead of using harsh, drying facial cleansers, try Jane Iredale’s Magic Mitt. It’s so gentle on skin and removes ALL makeup. I love it!
Kick your moisturizer up a notch with essential oils! Add your moisturizer to your palm and then add 1-2 drops of Frankincense or Lavender and mix together. Rub all over your face to feel the soothing goodness.
Drink lots and lots and lots of water!
I hope you enjoy these recipes and tips. Share them with a friend who loves natural beauty products!
