Homemade Dry Shampoo Recipe With Essential Oils
Homemade Dry Shampoo Recipe With Essential Oils
Dry shampoo is my best friend. Seriously. I love that I don’t have to look like a grease monkey when I don’t have time (or I’m too lazy) to wash my hair.
My hair is pretty long and it tends to get knotty, so washing and combing it through takes a really long time. And I’m really lazy. Did I mention that already?
This has to be one of my favorite recipes from my Easy Homemade Beauty Products with Essential Oils, but it’s really hard to choose!
Washing Your Hair Less Often is Actually a Good Thing
Once I stopped washing my hair every day and started using dry shampoo on the reg, I noticed my hair wasn’t getting as greasy between washes. I was able to go around 3-4 days without washing it, which was completely unheard for me five years ago!
I also noticed that my hair looked much healthier. You can’t beat that!
This is a handy guide that breaks down how often you should wash your hair based on your hair type. I don’t think this is the definitive guide by any means, but it’s a good starting point.

Why Homemade Dry Shampoo
Making dry shampoo has to be one of the easiest DIYs out there – and you probably have all of the ingredients already – so I say make it yourself!
Natural and organic dry shampoos can get expensive and those toxic ones? No thank you.
Even if you don’t have the ingredients, it’s worth the investment. You will probably be able to make enough dry shampoo for 20 years!
The best part about this homemade dry shampoo recipe is the essential oils we are adding to it. Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood are absolutely amazing for hair health.
So not only are you saving yourself time by not washing your hair every day, but you are also giving your scalp and hair an extra dose of goodness when you use your DIY dry shampoo. Plus, the combination of cocoa powder and essential oils smell out of this world amazing!

DIY Dry Shampoo Recipe
Ingredients
1 Tbsp Arrowroot Powder
1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
1 tsp Bentonite Clay (optional – I like the texture it adds)
5 drops Lavender Essential Oil
5 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
5 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil (buy all three here)
Directions
Add the powders and clay to a bowl and whisk together. Add in the essential oils and whisk until they are combined. Store in a small glass container or a salt shaker like I do!
How to use your Homemade Dry Shampoo
Add a bit of your dry shampoo to a small bowl or the lid of your container. Swirl a makeup brush in the powder, apply to your roots and work through with your fingers.
Or if you’re lazy like I am, just dip the makeup brush into the dry shampoo and apply to roots.
Final Thoughts on Homemade Dry Shampoo
There are a lot of variations of DIY dry shampoos out there. I find this one to be the easiest to make and the most effective for my hair type (fine but thick), but you may have to play around with the ingredients to find out what works the best for you.
If you have very light hair you can skip the cocoa powder and if you have really dark hair add more cocoa powder. I have brown/blondish hair and the 1:1 ratio works well for me.
I use my homemade dry shampoo along with my DIY Mermaid Spray (not at the same time) and I have to say, my hair has never looked healthier. I highly recommend skipping the daily washes and making yourself a batch of dry shampoo.
Enjoy!
